1. Pronunciation of nouns ending in -ion.
a. Read the article again and pick out the three new nouns ending in -ion.

2. Speaking about concession.
a. To express concession, you can use linking words.

  • Apartheid ended more than thirty years ago. Yet/However, serious inequalities persist in South Africa.
  • Although / Even though Apartheid ended more than thirty years ago, serious inequalities persist in South Africa. 

b. Practise.
Rephrase the following sentence using "although" or "even though."

  • Black South Africans were granted equality in 1994. But many of them still live in poverty.
  • Write two other sentences expressing  the paradoxes of South African society today as described in the article. Use the link words seen in Activity 2.a.
